Order Corvallis Knights Tickets By May 30th!

Celebrate Independent Business Night at the Knights!

To start off Celebrate Independents Week (July 1-7) with a bang, for the second year in a row all Corvallis area independent businesses are invited to join CIBA at the ballpark for a Corvallis Knights baseball game against the Bellingham Bells on Wednesday, July 3. Game time is 7:15 pm at Goss Stadium. Once again, this game is OSU Federal Credit Union Fireworks Night, too! The terrific fireworks display will begin at the game’s conclusion.

Bring your family, bring your staff, tell all your local business friends. Wear your Buy Local First t-shirt or your company shirt. CIBA has arranged for a general admission section to be reserved just for us. Let’s fill the stands! Be ready to cheer when Corvallis area independent businesses are recognized during the game!

To participate, pre-order your general admission tickets by using the form at www.corvallisiba.org/images/pdf/knights_baseball_game_application_2013.pdf . Fireworks Night is always a sell-out, so your order & payment will need to be in by Thursday, MAY 30. CIBA will place your order with the Knights to ensure seating in the Independent Businesses section.

Restructuring Business Membership Dues for CIBA

The CIBA Board of Directors has approved a new dues structure for business members, slated to go into effect with CIBA’s new fiscal year that starts July 1. The changes provide more “steps” in the dues structures, based on the number of full time equivalent employees a business has. The new rates are as follows:

1-14 FTE employees $100 per year (no change at this level)

15-49 FTE employees $200 per year

50-99 FTE employees $500 per year

100+ FTE employees $1,000 per year

If you know someone with a new start up business who would be interested in joining CIBA, have them contact us – the Board is interested in supporting new businesses at a reduced rate. The Board is also working on a separate rate schedule for local independent not-for-profit organizations that would like to join CIBA. The membership dues for Associate Members – individuals who are not independent business owners but who want to support CIBA’s mission and goals – remains at $25/year.

New Associate Member

Welcome to new CIBA Associate Member Kate Ottersten! We are excited to have you join CIBA’s efforts, Kate. (We’ll be in touch about that participating part, too!)

March Membership Meeting

Drive Less Connect

Tarah Campi, from the Council of Governments Drive Less Connect program attended a recent CIBA Executive Committee meeting to share what the program is about and how CIBA can help support it. She will be attending the March Membership Meeting with more information, but in the meantime, sends along the following information:

Check out www.DriveLessConnect.com to win prizes for biking, taking the bus, teleworking, walking, or carpooling. Transportation options have a clear benefit for your wallet, your health, and your planet. The program is free and local! Members in Corvallis have reduced 535,654 pounds of CO2 in the past year and saved $188,261. Want to learn more? Want to donate or sell a gift card that can be used as a prize for program participants -- and receive great regional marketing incentives in return? Call Tarah at 541-924-8480. Sign up today at www.DriveLessConnect.com to check it out!

Tarah is also available to talk with your staff about the program. She is interested in doing more outreach to smaller-sized businesses in Corvallis. And the folks at Council of Governments would really like the prizes (such as gift cards) for program participants to be from locally-owned businesses. Cut down on CO2, get exercise and promote local independent businesses – what a great combination!

City Policy in Development

Greg Gesher, City Engineer from the Public Works Department, came to the March CIBA Board member to present a draft policy the City Council asked staff to develop. The policy will address Public Right-of-Way (ROW) Encroachment. The goal of the policy is to establish a “consistent and efficient process that protects the public’s use of, and investment in, public right-of-way when considering requests for private building encroachments.

As Greg explained, the policy would cover consideration of applications for building permits for encroachments into public space, such as balconies and building “bump outs.” Examples provided included the Renaissance Building, Sky High Brewing and Water Street Park & Apartments. There hasn’t been a defined process up until now – and it takes up a lot of staff and council time when there is a request.

Greg distributed information and s draft. City staff have identified certain kinds of encroachments that staff could approve (currently all must be approved by City Council). Draft Right-of-Way Policy identifies Minor Encroachments (less than 12”, approved by administrative review by staff); Intermediate Encroachment (12”-4ft; can be occupied or unoccupied overhang; administrative review by staff); and Major Encroachment (all other requests – reviewed by City Council). In response to a question, Greg noted that awnings are considered public protection from weather and are handled by another City code. When approved, this policy will apply where building code encourages buildings to be constructed at the property line. It will not impact building set-back areas.

The packet of information Greg distributed also included one possible methodology for determining the annual fee for occupied overhang situations. Greg expects that possible fees will be thoroughly discussed at the Urban Services Committee and Council levels.

Everyone regulates encroachments in one way or another. The development of a policy is to help ensure consistency across applications in the future.

There are other users of the public right-of-way, such as use of sidewalks. They are charged for use of the right-of-way. This policy would ensure equity across types of use.

Below is a link to the City’s Website with proposed policy information. http://www.corvallisoregon.gov/index.aspx?page=1384

Comments can be sent to Greg Gesher, Public Works Dept., Engineering Division, PO Box 1083, Corvallis 97339. The Urban Services Committee will be considering this policy at the following meeting:

Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at 5:00 PM
Madison Avenue Meeting Room
500 SW Madison Avenue (Across the street from City Hall)

CIBA Newsletter - February 2013

Welcome to new CIBA Business Member:

◊ Wise Photo Printing

We are excited to have you join the CIBA family of independent local businesses!

Annual Independent Business Survey
Thanks to all CIBA members who participated in the 6th annual national survey of independent businesses, conducted by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance in partnership with AMIBA and many other independent business organizations.

Survey results showed encouraging trends for independent businesses in both sales and a rise in
pro-local attitudes. It also indicated independent businesses served by Independent Business Alliances (like CIBA!) and peer groups are outperforming their peers by a wide margin.

The survey tallied responses from 2377 businesses, all independent and locally-owned, across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. About half of the wide spectrum of respondents were retailers. Among the highlights:

§ Survey respondents reported revenue growth of 6.8% on average. More than two-thirds experienced revenue growth in 2012 — a larger share than in our 2011 and 2010 surveys.

§ Independent businesses in communities with an active “buy local first” initiative run by a local business organization (such as CIBA!) reported average revenue growth of 8.6% in 2012, compared to 3.4% for those in areas without such an initiative.

§ Among survey respondents in cities with a “buy local first” initiative, 75% reported that the initiative had had a positive impact on their business.

§ “Showrooming” — i.e., customers examining products and seeking information in local stores and then buying online — was identified by independent retailers as one of their biggest challenges. More than 80% said showrooming was affecting their business, with 47% describing the impact as “moderate” or “significant.”

§ Lack of financing was another top challenge, with 23% businesses surveyed reporting that they had been unable to secure a needed bank loan for their business in the last two years.

Showrooming Resources
CIBA shared two AMIBA resources about the practice of “showrooming” at the January Membership Meeting – a new “Buy It Where You Try It” poster and the article, “Seven Ways Businesses and Communities can Counter ‘Showrooming.’” If you would like either the poster or the article (or both!) contact the CIBA office at info@corvallisiba.org">info@corvallisiba.org or 541-752-0047.

These additional resources regarding showrooming are recommended by AMIBA:

§ AMIBA’s 2011 report on Amazon's "Spy on Competitors" promotion includes many specific examples of counter-showrooming.

§ Truth About Showrooming by Gaurav Pant and Girijesh Agarwal (Nov 2012)

§ The Growth of Internet Retailing: Implications and Strategies for the Specialty Toy Industry (pdf) by Stacy Mitchell (Aug 2012)

§ Retail 3.0? Mobile Technology is Both Bane and Boon to Retailers by Heather Clancy (June 2012)

§ Don't Let 'Showrooming' Sabotage Your Shop by Karen Klein (June 2012)

£ 2013 Independent Business Survey

Take 10 minutes to help out – participate in the annual Independent Business Survey, version 2013. The survey is being conducted by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, a national nonprofit research and educational organization, in partnership with dozens of Independent Business Alliances, Local First groups, and small business trade associations.

The survey has three goals:

1) To gauge how independent businesses are faring in today’s economy.
2) To assess whether people are more aware and supportive of locally owned, independent businesses.
3) To identify some of the main challenges affecting independent businesses.

This is the sixth year that this survey has been conducted. Last year, more than 1,800 businesses completed the survey, providing unique and important data about the viability of independent businesses and the effectiveness of "buy local" initiatives. The survey's findings were featured in more than 200 national and local media stories, bringing greater attention to independent businesses and the growing movement to support them.

Go to : https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/order-survey-results to complete the survey and help provide a snapshot of local independent businesses in Corvallis, Oregon and the country.
