£ Thanks to everyone who volunteered, provided a display table and came to celebrate Buying Local during the 2010 BUY LOCAL FIRST BREAKFAST series! Once again these three community breakfasts were a rousing success, serving a delicious breakfast (made primarily from Local 6 ingredients!) to over 600 people. Many kudos to our partners in this event – First Alternative Food Cooperative and the Corvallis Odd Fellows – and special appreciation to this year’s planning team for all their “behind the scenes” work to make each breakfast a smashing success!
£ A new joint effort of the City and the Corvallis Environmental Center will give you up to $500 for insulating or sealing your business through CORVALLIS WEATHERIZATION INCENTIVE PROGRAM (available to businesses located within the City limits; there is also a residential program). Here are the steps: 1. First, receive a free Business Energy Review through Energy Trust of Oregon subcontractor, Corvallis Environmental Center. 2. Choose your contractor(s) from the CWIP Contractor List, available at www.corvallisenvironmentalcenter.org (click on the Energy Efficiency tab and then CWIP). Projects MUST be completed using a contractor from this list to qualify for CWIP. 3. Work with your contractor to decide which weatherization project you want in your building. 4. For businesses, the incentive is a rebate, reimbursed directly to the business by the Corvallis Environmental Center. CWIP covers 75% of the project cost, up to $500 for floor, attic, wall, and duct insulation, duct sealing and air sealing, plus $35 each for air sealing and duct sealing tests. For full project details, visit www.corvallisenvironmentalcenter.org.

June Indie Spotlight: A Tribute to Corvallis Indie Pioneer, Richey’s Market
Family-owned Richey’s Market held its own since 1961 (almost 50 years). The company started with a single store owned by Jack and his brothers Purman, Leroy, and Shi. Within 10 years the business grew to 6 markets in Corvallis and Albany, all of which Jack insisted on managing personally. When an offer was made for the 3 Albany stores, a decision was reached to sell them. The 5th & Monroe store was closed in the 70’s and the 10th & Beca store closed about 10 years after that. This September, the last Richey’s Market will close its doors.
Independent grocers like Richey’s have been declining in numbers all across the country. Jack has always credited a loyal clientele for his success in Corvallis. He nurtured their loyalty to Richey’s by delivering service with a personal touch (special orders, bag boys to carry groceries out to each customer’s car, butchers who will cut a 4-inch New York steak if that’s what you needed). More than anything else, though, Richey’s Market has been known for high-quality local produce. Loyal customers comment about the small town store where you can buy locally grown fruit and veggies in season and get great customer service as well – “Can’t beat the freshness on that!” For many years, local growers have driven their pickups to the back door of Richey’s with a couple of flats of berries or bushels of tomatoes and have received a fair price for their produce.
Richey’s Market also became well-known as a local business that gives back to the community. Jack Richey and his wife Vera (married for over 60 years) have not only attended many American Legion baseball games but have sponsored the Richey’s Marketmen for more than 40 years. Richey’s also has been a long-time supporter of 4-H, assisting 4-H youth through the store’s participation in the livestock auction at the Benton County Fair.
Jack & Vera have received an award for their service and commitment to the American Legion program, and Jack has also received the “Everyday Hero” Award from Kiwanis.
CIBA recognizes the important role Jack Richey and Richey’s Market have had in Corvallis over the last 50 years, and honors Jack and his family for their years of hard work and dedication to our community.
Thank you, Richey’s Market!
Jack Richey will be the “Celebrity Pancake Flipper” at the final 2010 Buy Local First Breakfast on Saturday, July 3, from 7:30-9:30 a.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall downtown. Stop by to say thanks to Jack & Vera for all they have meant to our community!

May Spotlight On Indie Mainstay: Kirk Design and Construction
Kirk Design and Construction is located at 728 NW 4th St. Owners Emma Kirk, CGP, and Joel Kirk, CGP, share the following:
Kirk Design and Construction has been serving Corvallis for eight years. We provide Corvallis and the surrounding area with award-winning residential design/build remodeling services. Our motto is, "Where Artistry Meets Building Science™." Our emphasis is contemporary kitchens and bathrooms, such as this bathroom we just completed in the Country Club area:
http://www.finehomebuilding.com/item/11578/contemporary-bath-remodel
We love to design and build beautiful, long-lasting, sustainable spaces for our clients, and we strive to provide three things to every client: stunning design, high-quality construction, and a great value.
The best thing about being a local, independent business in Corvallis is the support and great relationships with the community and our fellow business owners and their employees.
What do we wish we knew when we started the business? More of everything! We were young (Emma was 20 and Joel was 24), but we came in with passion, and a relentless drive to create delighted customers (even if we didn't make money on the job!). We had to learn fast, and we continue to learn new things every day. In that spirit, we'll be returning from the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Chicago just about the time this Spotlight is printed, so stay tuned to our blog at http://www.kirkbuild.biz/blog/ to hear about the latest and greatest in kitchen and bath design!
