August Spotlight On Indie New Wave Business: Element Graphics

Spotlight on Indie New Wave Business: Element Graphics

Katy Krupp, owner of Element Graphics, shares the following.

Element Graphics Inc is a business based on creativity, customer satisfaction and hard work. Mainly, we screen print on garments, make signs and banners, and offer graphic design. We also offer vehicle lettering, embroidery and large format digital printing.

I grew up in Corvallis, left and came back. I enjoy this community and the opportunities here. While in college, I worked for Steve George (my high school swim coach), owner of Innovative Business Promotions. I was the head sign maker and graphic designer. Fast forward 10 years; Steve was looking to sell the sign making and screen printing portion of his business, keeping the promotional side. He offered me the purchase of the business and I took, what I felt, was a once in a lifetime opportunity. He gave me the key, I opened the door and thus began Element Graphics – in August of 2006. My specialty is graphic design, which I have cultivated here as well. By the way, Steve and I still swim in the mornings if anyone wants to join for a great workout!

Many local independent business owners in Corvallis have reached out to help me, answer questions and share ideas. I feel those conversations are priceless in my journey as a business owner. I am also doing my best with the beautification of Corvallis by making sure the signs we make are attractive.

The challenges I have faced as a new business owner are few within the community. It would be nice to have a lower rent payment without sacrificing location. We have also faced the challenge of gaining customers who don’t know it can be done better. People are surprised our ink doesn’t run or chip off shirts for example.

If you have events you need shirts or signs for, please come by, email or call. Our screen printer has 11 years of experience printing on garments. She is highly skilled at matching ink color. We have a large format digital printer that can print banners and signs with amazing clarity. If you need a logo or other design work, consider us, we like to create.

£ Thanks to everyone who volunteered, provided a display table and came to celebrate Buying Local during the 2010 BUY LOCAL FIRST BREAKFAST series! Once again these three community breakfasts were a rousing success, serving a delicious breakfast (made primarily from Local 6 ingredients!) to over 600 people. Many kudos to our partners in this event – First Alternative Food Cooperative and the Corvallis Odd Fellows – and special appreciation to this year’s planning team for all their “behind the scenes” work to make each breakfast a smashing success!

Here are the steps:

June Indie Spotlight: A Tribute to Corvallis Indie Pioneer, Richey’s Market

Family-owned Richey’s Market held its own since 1961 (almost 50 years). The company started with a single store owned by Jack and his brothers Purman, Leroy, and Shi. Within 10 years the business grew to 6 markets in Corvallis and Albany, all of which Jack insisted on managing personally. When an offer was made for the 3 Albany stores, a decision was reached to sell them. The 5th & Monroe store was closed in the 70’s and the 10th & Beca store closed about 10 years after that. This September, the last Richey’s Market will close its doors.

Independent grocers like Richey’s have been declining in numbers all across the country. Jack has always credited a loyal clientele for his success in Corvallis. He nurtured their loyalty to Richey’s by delivering service with a personal touch (special orders, bag boys to carry groceries out to each customer’s car, butchers who will cut a 4-inch New York steak if that’s what you needed). More than anything else, though, Richey’s Market has been known for high-quality local produce. Loyal customers comment about the small town store where you can buy locally grown fruit and veggies in season and get great customer service as well – “Can’t beat the freshness on that!” For many years, local growers have driven their pickups to the back door of Richey’s with a couple of flats of berries or bushels of tomatoes and have received a fair price for their produce.

Richey’s Market also became well-known as a local business that gives back to the community. Jack Richey and his wife Vera (married for over 60 years) have not only attended many American Legion baseball games but have sponsored the Richey’s Marketmen for more than 40 years. Richey’s also has been a long-time supporter of 4-H, assisting 4-H youth through the store’s participation in the livestock auction at the Benton County Fair.

Jack & Vera have received an award for their service and commitment to the American Legion program, and Jack has also received the “Everyday Hero” Award from Kiwanis.

CIBA recognizes the important role Jack Richey and Richey’s Market have had in Corvallis over the last 50 years, and honors Jack and his family for their years of hard work and dedication to our community.

Thank you, Richey’s Market!

Jack Richey will be the “Celebrity Pancake Flipper” at the final 2010 Buy Local First Breakfast on Saturday, July 3, from 7:30-9:30 a.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall downtown. Stop by to say thanks to Jack & Vera for all they have meant to our community!
